"During our stay, my wife fell ill. Diagnosed with severe malaria, she was transferred from the over-worked Moroni public hospital to a private clinic (at the hotel’s initiative). Over the next week, the Retaj’s staff treated us both as family and could not have been more helpful."

Prices are very high, but the normal for French Guyana. Kourou is not a city for pedestrians. So, there is no good location - everything is far for a walk. By car, it is really close to the space center.

"The shuttle bus from the airport was on site when we arrived and very comfortable after the plane ride. Check in was quick and the staff was amazing. Our room was exceptionally clean and the bed was comfortable."

"A good option in Kolonia. There isn't too much else. Run by Chinese, and they have a restaurant that opens for lunch and dinner, they can do your laundry, and you can hire an SUV car through them too. The beds were comfy, and the TV could get YouTube. Bottled water provided. The air con worked well too. Walking distance from the airport, but they picked me up and stopped me off. Very kind."

The hotel looks a bit grim and unappealing from outside. Could do with a lick of paint, and cheering up.

"Traditional hotel with very relaxed atmosphere. Family owned and staff who were absolutely lovely. Funny, friendly and helpful. Quite quirky with a definite African ambience. Not trying to be too perfect!! Close to the beach in a quiet area. Super pool with stress free feeling as quite shallow and never busy. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and visited regularly by cheeky monkeys."

A lack of written information describing amenities. Mosquitos can be a problem if you normally suffer after being bitten.

"Osebje je zelo prijazno. Hotel je čist in okusno opremljen.Izbor hrane pri obrokih je raznovrsten. Hrana je okusna. Hotel ima priznanje za najboljši hotel v BIH. Pozoren moraš biti pri rezervaciji, da naročiš sobo z balkonom. Midva sva rezervirala zadnjo možno ponudbo sobe, ki je bila mala, brez balkona in se nama je zdela sicer utesnjena, pa sva se potem navadila, ker ni bilo druge možnosti. Hotel ima lastno plažo s senčniki in ležalniki. Ležalnike je potrebno doplačati - najem na dan. Enako tudi parking. Plaža ima dobro lokacijo in si tam lahko cel dan brez težav. Tudi parking je plačljiv z možnostjo najema garažnega parkinga ali pred hotelom. Skratka, če si želite dopusta v Neumu, je to zelo dobra izbira."

It was quite expensive (30 euro par person taking a fish, 15 - with no fish), but tasty. Wine was exceptional. It was better then drive in the dark to the restaurant and back (the road is not easy even during the daylight). Adrian made the welcome. Very nice guy with good English. The owner, Vasko (sorry if a spell the name wrongly) is very nice guy. Able to speak Russian. Show us the winery. The wine is exceptional. Very quite place. The views are stunning."

The only one thing was not OK - in one of the rooms (we took 2) water in the shower drains poorly - floor was full of water.

"The location is awesome. Lovely beach with warm water and white sand. Beautiful. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. Breakfasts were pretty good. Dinners were very good. Expect lots of good seafood. I thoroughly enjoyed my stat. I only wish the weather was better while I was there."

I can’t think of anything I didn’t like.

"The staff were welcoming and friendly. The room was clean and the beds comfortable. There was a hot, good pressure shower. It’s in a great location for the bus station. The breakfast, which was 5€ extra each, was especially delicious and really set us up for the day."

Main dining area felt rather utiltarian. Food was fine , service friendly. The bingo/ karaoke evening was good fun
